Every day we often hear the question on everyone’s mind: “When will things return to normal?”. The answer we get most frequently to this question from authorities, specialists and experts in their fields is that “We don’t know. We quite simply do not have enough data, history, or experience with this novel coronavirus to make any accurate forecasts or predictions”.
Perhaps the scariest answer we may hear is “Never”. A return to what was previously considered normal may not be possible for years to come according to many experts, if at all. Again, the lack of knowledge regarding COVID-19 leads to a plethora of potential scenarios and possible issues that may end up resulting in a “new normal” way of life in the future for both Americans and the rest of the world. Especially when it comes to the future of our educational system.
This long-term ongoing state of “not knowing” can result into feelings of powerlessness that, over time, grow into uncertainty, frustration, and fear in many individuals.
School Closures – An Example of Fueling the Uncertainty and Fear
Using our educational system as an example, it’s common knowledge that the coronavirus pandemic forced widespread school closures in the U.S. in an unprecedented disruption of K-12 schooling. So far, it is estimated that school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic have impacted at least 124,000 U.S. public and private schools and affected over 55 million students. Plus, the school closures also affect millions of other people, such as parents and various school employees. Numerous essential and frontline workers who have school aged children were also forced to stay at home in order to take care of and educate their kids due to the closures.
So when will schools finally reopen? A reasonable question it seems, whose answer would ease a lot of the current uncertainty and fear that exists. Yet once again the answer is “Who really knows”?
Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said last week that he expects schools can reopen in the fall. Yet he still can’t be certain until more questions about the coronavirus are finally answered, he added.
Right now, 38 states, 3 U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia have ordered or recommended school building closures for the rest of the academic year, affecting approximately 41 million public school and 5 million private school students. Other proposed solutions and timetables discussed by various individual states and cities have included:
- Starting schools earlier in the Fall
- Shrinking the curriculum to cover only core subjects
- Having this year’s lessons be woven into next year’s
- Increasing the utilization of online and distance learning
- Holding back more children
- Creation of new “half-grade step-ups”
- Creation of a “massive” summer school program
- Whenever schools eventually do reopen, researchers say the likely result is a generation of students facing a “new normal” when it comes to getting an education in the foreseeable future.
